Travelling to Uppsala

Note! This is a work in progress!
As there will always be room for improvements, this page is expected to change appearance many times before the convention! If you feel that the information is lacking something important, don't hesitate to contact the organizer to ask for more specified info! Until we have created a contact form on this website, please use the contact form at the NTFA Forums to ask your question!.

Note: We have added a map over central Uppsala, to help you find your way to the hotel.

By airplane (Arlanda Airport)
If you go to Uppsala by airplane, you will most likely arrive at Sweden's largest airport, Arlanda Airport.
From Arlanda you can easily get to Uppsala by train or by bus.

There are two different trains going to Uppsala from Arlanda - both long-distance trains (operated by SJ), and a commuter train service called "Upptåget" (operated by UL). The latter is both more frequent and slightly cheaper, so we recommend that you aim to go with "Upptåget". Both types leave from the same platform, which you reach by escalators going down from between terminal 4 and terminal 5 at the airport after having paid your ticket at the desk at the top of the escalators (should the ticket desk be unmanned, you can also buy a ticket in a ticket machine or on the train; the latter costs extra though).
Be sure to catch the right type of train! The cheaper Upptåget is pictured on the right (usually coloured in red and white, but occasionally they are using trains in blue and white).

You can also take the airport coach from Arlanda to Uppsala. You can't buy the ticket aboard, but have to buy it using a credit card in a ticket machine (machines are available in terminals 2, 4 and 5 at the airport). Look for bus 801 operated by UL. It has three different stops outside terminal 2-3, terminal 4 and terminal 5.

Prices from Arlanda to Uppsala (adults):
By "Upptåget" (UL): 130 SEK, or 150 SEK aboard the train. Leaves every 30 minutes, trip takes 20 minutes.
By SJ: 150 SEK(?), or 250 SEK aboard the train. Leaves every 30 or 60 minutes, trip takes 20 minutes.
By bus: 100 SEK, must be bought in a ticket machine. Look for bus number 801; leaves every 30 minutes, trip takes 45 minutes.

Going back from Uppsala to Arlanda, you can buy your ticket at the Uppsala train station.

By train
If you're travelling to Uppsala by train, in most cases you will travel with SJ. Travelling from northern Sweden, there are many journeys with a stop in Uppsala. Travelling from southern or western Scandinavia, you may have to transfer in Stockholm. Refer to SJ's website for availability and ticket prices.

Exceptions: If you live in the greater Stockholm area and have access to an SL card, it's actually cheaper to take the SL train to Upplands Väsby and switch to Upptåget - if you show your SL card (which covers part of the journey up to Arlanda) it's a mere 40 SEK if you buy your ticket in advance, or 60 SEK if you buy it aboard the train, compared to the 80-85 SEK that it costs going by SJ from Stockholm to Uppsala. The trip takes 20 minutes longer though, and you are susceptible to further delays as you only have 3 minutes for the transfer in Upplands Väsby.

People travelling from the Gävle/X-län area area might also want to consider Upptåget, as the tickets are considerably cheaper than the corresponding ticket at SJ. Upptåget's journeys from/to Gävle are rather infrequent though.

By ferry from Finland (with a transfer in Stockholm to the train or bus)
Finns arriving by ferry to Stockholm will need to take the subway or the bus to central Stockholm. There you can either take the SJ train from Stockholm Central Station to Uppsala, or Swebus' express bus from "Cityterminalen" (above the Central Station) to Uppsala.

Prices from Stockholm to Uppsala (adults):
By train (SJ): From 80 SEK and up (buy it at the station; it's 100 SEK extra if you buy it aboard the train). Leaves every 30 or 60 minutes, trip takes 40 minutes.
By bus (Swebus): From 59 SEK and up (buy it at Cityterminalen; cannot be bought aboard the bus). Leaves every 30-90 minutes, trip takes 60-75 minutes.

By bus
It is also possible to go to Uppsala by long-distance bus. Swebus Express has two routes going from Gothenburg to Uppsala (one via Örebro, Eskilstuna, and more; one via Borås, Jönköping, Linköping, Norrköping, and more), one from Copenhagen to Uppsala (via Malmö, Helsingborg, Jönköping, etc), and one from (Malmö)/Kalmar to Uppsala (via Västervik, Norrköping, etc).
For those who travel from northern Sweden there's Ybuss, which has five routes going from Timrå, Östersund, Umeå, Sollefteå and Delsbo, which all stop in Uppsala.
And those are just the direct routes. There are many more long-distance buses going to Stockholm, where you can transfer to another bus for the last part of the trip. Norwegians who don't want to spend money on a train trip or airplane tickets can for example consider the bus from Oslo to Stockholm.
